How Low Can A Crosshead Go?
Major Advancement in Microextrusion Technology

BH25A MicroCrosshead with Sprial Deflector: Major advancement in Microextrusion Technology

BH25A MicroCrosshead with Sprial Deflector

January 18, 2011. San Marcos, CA. B&H Tool Company, a world leader in extrusion tooling technology, has introduced the industry's lowest volume microcrosshead. The BH25A MicroCrosshead with Spiral Deflector delivers breakthrough microextrusion performance for applications including microbore tubing, fiber optics, and insulated fine wire.  It was tested by major medical device manufacturers that documented major improvements in process capability and stability.

The BH25A can extrude PEEK tubing with a product ID of .010” and OD of .015".  It will extrude FEP insulated fine wire with an OD of .00471" and core OD of .00157". Tolerances are heavily dependent on the process and material, but are generally in the range of +.0005".

Customers who tested the BH25A MicroCrosshead with Spiral Deflector achieved exceptional ID/OD control, superior melt flow, highly uniform material distribution, and short residence time. This resulted in extraordinary concentricity and finished surface quality. Customers using this innovative tooling say these features provide a significant competitive advantage.

The BH25A is manufactured in two versions, both appropriate for biomedical and other FDA applications. A 420 stainless steel model provides optimum performance for thermoplastics, and a Hastelloy head is specified for use with fluoropolymers.

February 15, 2011. San Marcos, CA B&H Tool Company, a world leader
in extrusion tooling technology, has appointed HS&S Plastic Machinery to
represent them throughout California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona,
and New Mexico.

HS&S has served the equipment needs of plastic extruders since its
founding in 1978. It is well-recognized throughout the OEM and job shop
community for providing engineered equipment solutions, including
material handling, extruders, tooling, chillers, pullers and automation.

According to owner Frank Sforza, "we are very excited about representing
B&H Tool. They are a well-known manufacturer with a strong focus on
customer problem-solving. Our primary strength is working with the largest
extruders who manufacture from 1/2 " through 8", using single and twin
screws, and all of those applications are an excellent fit for B&H tooling."

Interestingly, HS&S and B&H Tool already have a history together.
"We represented them years ago," explains Sforza, "when B&H Tool
had different ownership. It was an excellent complement to our machinery
then, and I expect the synergy will benefit customers to an even greater
extent now."

"The expertise and professionalism of the HS&S team is a perfect
complement for B&H," adds B&H Tool Company President Peter Neville.
"This partnership will greatly enhance our ability to help customers
optimize their extrusion processes."

HS&S is headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, with satellite offices
serving the Pacific Northwest and Bay Area. The company is owned jointly
by Frank Sforza and Rod Hughes.

Head Assembly Trial Provides Risk-Free
Opportunity to Boost Extrusion Quality

Feb 4, 2011. B&H Tool Company, a world leader in extrusion tooling
technology, has introduced a no-risk, 30-day trial of their market-leading
extrusion head assembly. This head assembly design is used worldwide
by manufacturers of insulated wire, jacketed cable, tubing, hose, pipe
and profiles for the precise extrusion of thermoplastics,
fluoropolymers and silicones.

At the start of the trial period, B&H will provide an extrusion head
assembly tailored to the extruded material, and specific tasks specified
by the user. The customer agrees to test the head assembly during the
trial period to ensure it meets predetermined performance and process
specifications.

The B&H Trial Program is the first of its kind, and offers users a risk-free
way to evaluate and compare its distinctive extrusion head assembly.
Unique in the industry, the B&H design has a proven ability to establish
and maintain extrusion process stability. Regardless of the task, the
B&H assembly can lower the life-cycle cost of tooling, optimize the
quality and consistency of extruded product, and reduce set-up and
scrap – while often facilitating faster line speeds.

The B&H Trial program is offered to qualified extruders worldwide at
the discretion of B&H Tooling. Ancillary products, such as adapters,
tooling and heaters, are the responsibility of the user. For additional
program details, and tooling specifications, contact B&H Tool Company
at (800) 272-8878, or (760) 471-8949. Or, for the name of the

Free, Expert Assessment Proves
Powerful Troubleshooting Tool

Free 15 Minute Extrusion AssessmentJuly 26, 2010. San Marcos, CA.
B&H Tool Company, a solutions provider
for manufacturers of insulated cable,
wire, tubing, hose, pipe and profiles,
has debuted an important new assessment
tool that helps solve the most serious
problems extruders face. These problems
are related to process (wall thickness, O.D.
and I.D. control, etc.) quality (leaking, burning
and knit lines) and equipment issues.

This new tool is a comprehensive
15-minute technical assessment, which is
offered at no cost to qualified extruders,
in both OEM and job shop environments.

In 15 minutes, a B&H Tool Company solution specialist can help identify
the true root causes of problems, and determine whether there are
instrumentation, tooling or service solutions that can make their process
more stable, consistent, and productive.

In months of beta tests with some of North America’s most prominent
extruders, the B&H 15-minute assessment has proven to be a valuable
means for clarifying issues that are critical to extrusion performance,
and the development of workable, cost-effective solutions. The assessment
can also be a valuable tool for extruders who want to increase production
without major capital investment, or who want to pursue a quality certification.

New Analysis Package Identifies and
Solves Common Extrusion Woes

Technical and Process Analysis Package

June 7, 2010. San Marcos, CA. B&H Tool, a manufacturer of precision
extrusion tooling for cable, hose, pipe and profiles, has introduced a
comprehensive Technical and Process Analysis Package for extruders
of thermoplastics and fluoropolymers.

This engineering service package is designed to quickly and efficiently
identify the causes of difficulties related to five issues: equipment surging,
dimensional variation, plastic material degradation, and appearance problems.
It is offered throughout North America, and is individually tailored to the
needs of individual extruders.

The B&H Technical and Process Analysis Package includes a detailed
evaluation of operations, material handling up and downstream of the
extrusion operation, the extruding equipment, screw geometry, dies,
packaging and all process metrics. Particular attention is given to
temperature profiles at critical junctures and how they affect both
equipment and material performance, short and long-term.

The B&H Technical and Process Analysis Package was originally developed
for multi-plant extruders who wanted a highly repeatable system for
permanently improving end product quality, increasing process stability,
and reducing scrap and downtime.

Two important parts of the new package include the detailed simulation
of a proposed process change before it is implemented, and the modeling
of a process that is being planned, in order to ensure it will behave
as engineered.

The Technical and Process Analysis Package offered by B&H Tool Company
is a timely, practical, and cost-effective alternative for extruders of all
plastic material, and facilities of all sizes.

In addition to our Technical and Process Analysis Package, B&H Tool
Company offers comprehensive in-plant training for extrusion line workers,
supervisors and material specialists, from introductory level through
advanced. Training topics include compounding, SPC, troubleshooting,
profile extrusion, sheet extrusion, and foam extrusion.

In-house training provided through B&H Tool Company is customized to
each facility, and can be an excellent follow-up to a Technical and Process
Analysis, assuring that new concepts and process modifications are fully
understood and implemented.

B&H Tool Company supplies thermoplastic, FEP and silicone extrusion
tooling, including crossheads, in-line dies, adaptors, tips and dies,
heaters and related equipment.
